CULTURAL CAPITAL
Oviedo is remarkable for a
well-defined cultural character wrought
through the centuries. From the pre-Romanesque
architecture of the original court
to the foundation of the University,
from Father Feijoo to the philosopher
Gustavo Bueno; from Clarín to
Alarcos, the millenary development
of the city has been emphasized by
its cultural activity.
In addition to its architecture, its
literature and painting, Oviedo distinguishes
itself by its special love of music:
the Opera Season, the Lyrical Festival,
the so-called Piano Journeys, the Symphonic
Music Cycles with the most renowned
line-ups and directors of the moment...all
of which is not sufficient to give
a thorough account of the love of this
city for music, since, in addition,
there are adult and children's bagpipe
groups, choirs, a Philharmonic Society
that will soon celebrate its hundredth
birthday and orchestras such as the
OSCO and the Asturias Philharmonic
Orchestra (OSPA) that carry the name
of our city and of the region throughout
numerous music festivals.
Yet the cultural summit of the year
is, no doubt, the solemn presentation
of the "Prince Philip" Awards,
whose winners receive a much-deserved
public tribute in the presence of relevant
personalities, which turn the city
into the world’s cultural capital
over the period. |
