THE STREETS
Over the last years Oviedo has undergone
an unprecedented upheaval of its urban
fabric which has set it up as an example
followed by a good many number of cites
that have considered it to be the right
pace to enliven and enhance both city
and business.
The city has been thoroughly pedestrianised,
and several measures have been taken,
as the integral protection of the Old
Quarter, the transformation of the
urban business centre into a wide pedestrian
area and the construction of various
alleys, specifically for pedestrians
in the different districts and suburban
areas.
In addition to this, over one hundred
sculptures have been located in streets
and squares all around the city, the
lighting system has been significatively
improved, allowing delightful night
walks, and a modern and efficient selective
rubbish collection system has been
adopted. Public acknowledgement as
one of Spain’s cleanest cities
has been provided through the “Escobas
de oro y de platino” (Gold and
platinum sweepers) Awards.
“...Oviedo is an exquisite, exotic,
beautiful, clean, pleasant, quiet and
pedestrian-friendly city. It is as
if it did not belong to this world,
as if it did not exist...Oviedo is
like a fairy-tale city, even with a
Prince...” (Woody Allen, Oviedo,
October 2002).
