King Fruela, fourth King of the Asturian Monarchy, is considered to be the first promoter of the city with the erection of a church and palace close to each other. Nevertheless, It’s thanks to King Alfonso II the Chaste that Oviedo becomes the heart of the Kingdom when by transferring the Court from Pravia converted the newly founded city into the Capital of his kingdom. In addition to this, the creation of the Way of St James added to the increasing importance of the city together with the construction of a church dedicated to “El Salvador” (Our Holy Saviour) and a Royal Palace. All this constituted the the starting point from which the hsitory of the city boosted.

It is then that the city turns into the “epicentre” of Asturian Art, a unique art style heir to Eatern, Visigothic and Nordic traditions that reaches its nadir during the reign of Ramiro I.

After the death of King Alfonso III the Great the court was moved to Leon, the life of Oviedo being now closely related to the Holy Relics kept in its cathedral and the flow of pilgrims who came to visit “El Salvador” (Our Holy Saviour) to keep on with their pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.
The following centuries (13th c-16th c) witness the development of the so-called “mediaeval city”, whose urban design is still at present easy to spot; the construction of a defensive wall around the city, a devastating fire on Christmas Eve 1521 and Los Pilares aqueduct, a fabulous venture, integral part of the water supply system of the city, in the 16th c.
